Debra Pendergast, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, is CNO and senior vice president of patient care services for John Muir Medical Center’s Walnut Creek (Calif.) campus. She joined John Muir Health in 2011.
Ms. Pendergast has had a vast nursing career. Formerly, she was vice president of patient care services/CNE at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. For more than 13 years she also served as the first chair of the Division of Nursing Services at Mayo Clinic Arizona where she developed and guided the nursing professional practice model and hospital operations. She also has been director of patient care services at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Memorial Hospital. She is a retired commander in the Naval Reserve Nurse Corps, in which she served for 20 years.
Ms. Pendergast received her BSN from Hampton (Va.) University and her MSN in administration from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. She is a Wharton Fellow in Nursing Management (University of Pennsylvania) and a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow Alumni. She has held adjunct faculty appointments at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, University of Phoenix, University of Wisconsin and Medical College of South Carolina. She also served as a military officer leadership trainer.
